A practical guide to preparing a yacht for the Algarve summer, covering maintenance checks, systems, safety equipment, and seasonal readiness.
For many boat owners in the Algarve, summer is the period of highest use. Longer days, calm conditions, and visiting friends or family mean boats are often used more frequently and for longer trips. Preparing properly before the season begins makes a significant difference to how enjoyable and reliable that time on the water will be.
One of the first areas to focus on is mechanical readiness. Engines, drives, and generators should be serviced according to schedule, not pushed “one more season”. Summer usage places continuous demand on systems, and small issues that are manageable in spring often become major inconveniences in peak season. Cooling systems, belts, filters, and fluid levels deserve particular attention.
Electrical systems are another common source of summer problems. Batteries that performed adequately during lighter winter use may struggle once fridges, air conditioning, electronics, and charging systems are running continuously. Checking battery health, shore power connections, chargers, and onboard monitoring systems helps prevent sudden failures when the boat is in regular use.
Safety equipment should also be reviewed carefully. Lifejackets, flares, fire extinguishers, bilge pumps, and emergency systems should be checked and replaced where necessary. Even experienced owners sometimes assume equipment is fine because it was fine last year. Heat, humidity, and time have a way of changing that.
Comfort systems often get overlooked during preparation, but they matter greatly once guests are onboard. Air conditioning, refrigeration, freshwater pumps, heads, and ventilation systems should be tested thoroughly. A boat that is technically sound but uncomfortable quickly loses its appeal, especially during hotter months.
Hull condition and underwater components are another key consideration. Antifouling effectiveness, anodes, propellers, and intakes should be inspected as part of seasonal planning. Fouling builds faster in warmer water, and reduced performance or overheating can often be traced back to issues below the waterline.
Finally, preparation is also about mindset. Summer boating should be relaxed, not reactive. Addressing known issues early, planning maintenance realistically, and allowing time for testing after work is completed reduces the chance of last-minute problems. Boats that enter the season fully prepared tend to deliver smoother, more enjoyable experiences for owners and guests alike.
Preparing a yacht properly for the Algarve summer is not about doing everything possible. It’s about doing the right things at the right time, based on how the boat is used and what it realistically needs.
